We spent three years researching RVs, sold our house, sold, donated, or stored most of our belongings, purchased a used motor coach, and started traveling the US with zero experience. Zero. ZERO.
Oh wait…the three week RV ‘trial run’ trip we took a few years prior cemented the RV decision for our family. But beyond that trip, zero experience.
We quickly discovered what worked and what didn’t. After our first year of traveling, we asked ourselves, “Why didn’t anyone tell us about __ ?” That list kept growing.
When a major hurricane shut down the flooded city where our belongings were stored, we realized we’d never considered the elevation of the storage facility.
When I stood by a fuel pump opposite an RV, the driver hopped down from the driver’s seat. I asked her why she chose to drive it. She replied, “Why wouldn’t I drive it? It’s my home! Plus, what if my husband breaks his leg or has the flu and he can’t drive, but we have to leave that location and head to the next one. What would we do? You can learn to drive a rig! You’ll learn to drive because it’s important to maintaining your freedom!”
When we moved our domicile to a different state, the weight of our new motor coach meant we had to do a driving test in the rig for a non-commercial Class B license. In our previous state, you could drive up to a forty-five foot motor home with your Class C (standard) driver’s license. That was never on my original To-Do list!
You can find basic instructions such as “choose your mail service” and “buy a boat”. You’ll probably come across online groups geared toward people already traveling using the same mode of transportation. Some are groups filled with incredibly generous people who’s share their time, wisdom and expertise.
Yes, there’s a ton of support once you’re actually extended traveling or full-time traveling, whether by boat, RV, or airplane. Every travel tip and trick is available somewhere online.
But who supports you during the process of completely overhauling your lifestyle into location independence?
Who helps you dig deep and answer specific questions like “How do I decide whether to sell or rent out my house while we’re traveling?”
Who helps you turn “buy a _” into realistic action steps so you don’t make an expensive regrettable mistake?
Who helps you navigate those challenging conversations with your family and friends who think you’re a bit bonkers (or worse) for wanting to uproot your already incredible life and take off long-term for a life filled with unknowns?
Who shares their knowledge and expertise with you so you can drastically cut down your prep stage and navigate your decision-making with wisdom?
Who supports you when you feel frustrated and want to vent?
Who cheers excitedly for every step you make toward your dream travel life?
