Easy question, right?
The answer drives everything. It’s like the engine in your car. It’s the push, the impetus, the motivation, the fuel.
Most people don’t work out because they love to exercise. They work out because it makes them feel better, helps them look better, is part of a healthy lifestyle, fills them with endorphins, and allows them to drain their energy when they’re angry. Those are their WHYs. Rarely is it because they just love to exercise.
Understanding your WHYs can make the difference between remaining focused on those inevitable tough days or giving up. It’s the rare person who keeps motivated without a few personal WHYs. We’re assuming you’re not one of those unicorns (neither are we).
It also helps you make decisions more quickly. Surprised?
Take a few minutes and write down the reasons WHY you want to travel. Ask everyone who’ll be traveling with you to do the same. You can each do it on your own and then combine your answers into one big list or work on it together!
You can even include extended family and friends. It’s a great way to assure them that you want them involved in your lives and you’re not leaving them behind…you’re planning ahead for when they visit you on the road!
Your WHYs can be big (like scuba diving) or small (trying local ice creams). It can be something everyone enjoys (like playing at the beach) or something only one or two of you want to do (like listening to jazz). It doesn’t matter.
Remember to include who likes it as their WHY.
Here are some ideas to get you started:
WHY WE LIKE TO TRAVEL
play on the beach
try new foods
listen to local musicians
visit national parks
hike
ski
sit under a tree and read
see birds in their home habitat
learn about history
meet new people
experience new adventures
try paragliding
visit new countries
practice speaking a second language
Hang on to your list, adding to it as new ideas come to mind. We’re going to be referring back to it again and again for different reasons so take the time now to list your dream WHYs!
